My Trip to the UK, October 2010: Day Three

Cardiff

Sunday was spent exploring Cardiff. We drove into the city centre and walked through a couple of the shopping centres, heading to Cardiff Castle.

The first view of the castle itself.

Entering the grounds.

The wartime tunnels, used to shelter civilians during the bombing in WWII.

From the left: Stadium House, Millenium Stadium, the Clock Tower of the castle.

We came out by the Norman keep.

Most of the Castle is reconstructed, but the original Roman stone can be seen at the lowest part of the wall here (topped with red stone).

All that remains of the wall which once divided the castle grounds into public and private areas.

The Gothic style private apartments.

The "Arab Room".

I believe this large hall was the banqueting hall.

From here, the stairs led down to a private dining room.

The Third and Fourth Marquesses of Bute.

The library.

One last shot of the grounds.

A gift shop across the street from the Castle.

One of Cardiff's many arcades; we went here looking for lunch, but the shop had already closed.

Heading away from the Castle.

My first glimpse of Cardiff Bay. The tall white building straight ahead is referred to in Doctor Who as the place where Margaret Blaine lives, and beyond it is the St. David's Hotel and Spa.

Mermaid Quay's shopping area.

Cardiff Bay. The building over the water is Cadwalader's (an ice cream chain).

A shot of Bosphorus, a Mediterranean restaurant. Also used as a filming location in Doctor Who. Beyond it is, again, the St. David's.

Statues at the end of the walkway.

Going down the steps and turning back toward the statues reveals the impromptu shrine to Ianto Jones of Torchwood, begun after the character died in 2009. This was also a filming location (a front for the "tourist office" in Torchwood), but none of the actual set can be seen now because the shrine has covered it all.

Swans and ducks looking for handouts in the Bay.

Another Torchwood filming site ("Fragments" and a lot of other bits).

And this is where Owen ran down the pier and jumped into the water in "A Day in the Death". Off to the left, the small white building is the Norwegian Church (where Roald Dahl was baptised).

The Celtic love knot (seen in the Torchwood episode "Meat").

Roald Dahl Plass.

Looking up the Plass to the water tower sculpture and the Millenium Center.

The Pierhead Building.

The Millenium Center. In these stones, horizons sing.

Looking back down towards the Bay. The Plass is much wider than I expected it to be.

Between the Millenium Center and the Pierhead Building is the Senedd Building, where the Welsh National Assembly sits.

The water tower: even more impressive up close.

There's an invisible lift around here somewhere.

On we went to the Dr. Who Exhibition, which is in the Red Dragon Centre, across the street from the Plass.

TARDIS!

A Clockwork Robot and Madame de Pompadour's dress.

Captain Jack's coat, along with one of his outfits from Torchwood (the dark blue shirt, trousers, and boots). Seeing this made me cry. A lot.

EXTERMINATE

Don't blink. Don't even blink.

The Anne-Droid and Trin-E from "Bad Wolf" and "Parting of the Ways".

K-9! OMG! K-9!

I also did just a bit of shopping in there.

Heading back to the car park, I saw this. Bar Cwtch, in the cellar of Jolyons Hotel. So wonderfully Welsh.

Final looks at Mermaid Quay.

And then we went back to the hotel, had bad pizza, and slept.
