London: Wednesday

Wednesday was all about the Tower of London. On the way over, we took some pictures of the piece of Roman wall still standing by the Tube station, and a few other bits that had been unearthed during digging for the Underground.

The Hung, Drawn and Quartered is actually a fairly recent pub with a delicious menu. We stopped there for lunch; I had the Somerset Brie and sweet potato pie, and it was goooood.

And then on to the Tower, which is covered in these really nifty statues of various animals that lived at one time or another in its menagerie. They're all made out of chickenwire.

The Bloody Tower, full of antique torture devices.

The ravens! This isn't a great shot, but we saw more later.

I have no idea who these two were supposed to be, but they appeared to have a lengthy conversation.

Inside the White Tower itself, there were several interesting displays of armor, as well as carved horses that had been created specifically to show them off -- one of the city's first public museums, apparently.

More interesting stuff -- a gigantic book of records and a variety of donations, including beautiful katanas and pistols. The dragon, made up of a variety of weapons, saw us out.

Monkeys! And more views of the Tower, as well as the guard outside the Jewel Tower. Since the Crown Jewels are in there, no pictures are allowed.

This sculpture stands where several notable persons were killed -- including Anne Boleyn.

Though there was some sort of changing-of-the-guard thing going on at one of the private apartments, this raven was unconcerned.

A few last shots of the Tower; then we walked out to get some pictures of Tower Bridge. And one of the underside, just because I thought it was neat.

Dinner: bucatini alla bolognese with meatballs and French bread. Cooked -- once we figured out how to use the stove and oven -- by us. And it was actually really good.
